Testosterone and Menopause: What you should know

Falling hormone levels and the cessation of the menstrual cycle are signs of menopause. This is truly a transformative time for women. There are many symptoms that is expected during this transition. They include but not limited to hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness. However, a less commonly known symptoms is low testosterone. This can cause symptoms that may be unaddressed.

The testosterone hormone is often thought to be for men but it is vital for women too. Testosterone can help with sexual function such as desire, arousal, and orgasm. It can improve bone strength, mood and brain health. While low testosterone can happen anytime in a person's life, it is more common after menopause. If you have unexpected or hard to explain symptoms especially when it is connected to sexual function, talk to a provider who is well versed on sexual health and hormone therapy.
